BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team defeated a team of local Marines 7-2 in a charity softball game benefiting the Semper Fi Fund. It was the second year in a row that the Owls participated in the event. FAU won last year's inaugural game 4-3.
The Semper Fi Fund provides veterans and their families with assistance while they recover from injury. The event served to raise awareness for FAU Veteran Owls, an on-campus organization that helps current FAU students that have served in the armed forces adjust to college life.
As she did last year, Sarah Howell put the Owls ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first, scoring on a groundout. In the second inning, Shelby Knox doubled in Alison Milam before coming around to score herself on an USMC error. The Owls maintained control throughout the game. The Marines scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but gave up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
After the game, both teams were presented with trophies as well as bats celebrating their involvement.
