BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team swept the weekly honors handed down by the Atlantic Sun Conference. For the second time in three weeks and the third time this year, Candice Freel has been named A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week. In addition, Pam Mazzarella was name A-Sun Player-of-the-Week. Both were instrumental in leading FAU to a perfect 4-0 week.
Freel, a junior from Corvallis, OR, went 2-0 and picked up a save in her three appearances while extending her winning streak to 15 games. Her efforts began with a four-hit shutout in nine innings against Mercer on Friday at FAU Field. She struck out a career-high 13 batters and did not allow a walk or an extra-base hit. On Sunday, she allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in a shutout of Georgia State in six innings in FAU's game one victory. Freel then came on to pick up the save in game two.
In all, Freel pitched 16 innings and allowed five hits with 23 strikeouts and one walk. She retired 48 of the 54 batters she faced and extended her scoreless innings streak to 22 and has allowed just one run in her last 47 innings.
Freel leads the A-Sun with a 0.77 ERA and leads FAU with a 21-6 record. She has not lost since February 29. Since that time, she has a 0.36 ERA, allowing five earned runs in 97 innings pitched.
Mazzarella, a junior from Brookfield, CT, went 6-for-13 with a .462 batting average. She collected one homer, two doubles, and six RBIs. She went 5-for-7 with five RBIs in the two wins against Georgia State. That included a 3-for-4 effort in game one with a three run homer and four RBIs. Mazzarella leads FAU with a .353 average.
For their careers, Freel has been so honored six times while Mazzarella receives her fifth Player-of-the-Week honor.
FAU is receiving votes in both national polls. The Owls are 44-13 overall and 11-1 in the A-Sun and have won 29 of their past 33 games. They are next in action Wednesday at Stetson in a 4:00pm doubleheader in DeLand, FL.
