BOCA RATON, FL - Carly Speerin scored the game winning run to help the Florida Atlantic softball team defeat the Marine Corps 4-3 in a charity softball game benefiting the Semper Fi Fund.

The game was a very well attended affair and helped raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund, which provides veterans and their families with assistance while they recover from injury. The event served to raise awareness for FAU Veteran Owls, an on-campus organization that helps current FAU students that have served in the armed forces adjust to college life.

Sarah Howell put the Owls ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first, sliding safely into home. USMC scored a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game. FAU quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Alexa Ballard drove in Lauren Tremblay to give the Owls a 2-1 advantage.

The Marines scored one run to tie the game at three in the top of the seventh inning. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Speerin reached to bring Taylor Fawbush to the plate. Fawbush hit a fly ball to right field, but a USMC error allowed Speerin to score the game winning run all the way from first.

FAU will travel to Louisiana for a six-game road trip beginning on Saturday when they face Louisiana-Lafayette in a doubleheader beginning at noon eastern. Live stats of all games will be available at
