BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University's Drew Jackson of baseball, Kandis Legall of women's tennis, and Samantha Messer of softball have earned student-athlete of the week honors for their game winning performances over the weekend.
Jackson pitched six innings of shutout work in baseball's first Conference USA victory at UTSA on Saturday, striking out seven while walking one to earn the victory. The junior allowed only four hits and one walk while Andrew Archer and Kevin Alexander took over to complete the shutout. The Owls won 3-0 and will return home to host Maine and Louisiana Tech in a five-game home stand beginning on Tuesday, March 11.
Legall went 4-0 playing in the No. 1 position over spring break. She is 9-2 overall and has won nine matches in a row. Her biggest win last week came against Xavier as she defeated the team's No. 1 position player 7-5, 6-2. The freshman from Palm Coast, Fla. has played the No. 1 singles position for the Owls all season. Women's tennis hosts Troy today at 11 a.m., Hillsdale on Thursday, March 13 at 1 p.m. and Middle Tennessee State on Friday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
Messer threw five perfect innings in relief to help the Owls to a 6-5 comeback win over Michigan State. The junior then threw a complete game three-hitter with a career-high 10 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Marshall on Wednesday, March 5. She started and went 3.1 innings in a 9-6 series-clinching win over Marshall on Thursday, March 6. The Sarasota, Fla. native tossed a complete game four-hitter in the Owls' 1-0 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday, March 7, her fourth shutout of the season. For the week, she made five appearances, threw 24.2 innings with a 2.55 ERA and 18 total strikeouts. FAU's softball team travels to Orlando this week to face Yale at 1 p.m. and UCF at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, before heading to face UAB on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16.
