BOCA RATON, FL - After a 2-4 showing at the Palm Springs Classic, the Florida Atlantic University softball team will host former Atlantic Sun rival Stetson University on Wednesday, February 27 before playing host the Miken Classic this weekend.
The Owls upset no. 6 LSU at the Palm Springs Classic last weekend behind a complete game shutout by freshman Rose Gressley. FAU also scrimmaged the United States National team while in California.
FAU faces Stetson in a single game at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The game will pick up on a rivalry that began in the Atlantic Sun Conference where the Owls were members for 12 years. FAU has won four of the last five meetings with Stetson, home and home sweeps in 2007. Stetson (10-6) won four of their five games at the Hatter Invitational. Senior infielder Lindsay Wightman leads the Hatters with a .349 batting average and is second on the team with three homeruns.
This weekend, the Owls host their third tournament of the season, the Miken Classic. On Friday, FAU will play Tennessee State University and Bethune Cookman University. The Tigers (4-2) have will head to Boca Raton on a two-game losing streak after falling to the University of Dayton and Georgia State University. The Wildcats (1-12) recorded their first win of the season on Sunday and will host St. Francis (PA) University on Wednesday before traveling to Boca Raton.
On Saturday, FAU will play Central Michigan and Illinois at 6 and 8 p.m. respectively. The Chippewas (3-1) come to the Miken Classic after just opening their season at the Spartan Classic in Greensboro, NC. Illinois returns after participating in last season's Pepsi Classic. The Illini defeated the Owls 1-0 in the two teams' only meeting last season. Illinois (8-7) enters the tournament on a roll after defeating host Florida International University in the finals of the Golden Panther Inviational last Sunday. Rutgers University (2-2) rounds out the tournament field.
