BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University senior shortstop Emily Lochten is one of 50 players named to the initial Preseason Watch List for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award.
The list was announced Wednesday by the Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States. The award is in its 17th season, and is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball.
Lochten was named Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year earlier this month. Last season, the Lake Worth, Florida, native led the Owls in numerous offensive categories, including batting average (.408) and RBI (41), while setting single-season program records for runs scored (58), slugging percentage (.834) and on-base percentage (.539), and tying the FAU mark for total bases (131). She is already the program’s all-time leader in career stolen bases with 92. At the conclusion of the 2017 season, Lochten was named a Third Team NFCA All-American, becoming just the third player in program history to earn All-American honors.
The Top 25 Finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 25. While an athlete does not have to be on the “Watch List” to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 9 and the Top 3 announced May 23. The 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 29.
The Owls open up their 2018 season at home with a doubleheader against Duke on Thursday, Feb. 8 as part of the FAU First Pitch Classic. For tickets, contact the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
