LINCOLN, NE - Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Creighton University, 1-0, Saturday in an elimination game at the NCAA Regional in Lincoln, NE. The loss ends FAU's season at 56-18. The lone run came on a solo homer by Abby Johnson with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
FAU entered the game needing four wins in two days to earn its first trip to the College World Series. The Owls had already won two elimination games. Both teams had chances to score prior to the sixth. In the first and fourth innings, Creighton (44-16-1) had runners on first and second with one out. Each time, Amanda Morin struck out the next two batters to get out of trouble.
In the fifth and sixth, FAU put the leadoff batter on both times but couldn't advance runners past second. At the plate, FAU banged out six hits. Jenn Piazza went 2-for-3.
In the circle, Morin was dominant, despite suffering her first NCAA Tournament loss. The sophomore gave up four hits and struck out eight. She finished the season 20-8.
The game marked the end of one of the best seasons in FAU history. The Owls' 56 wins ranks third-best in the program's 10-year history. Its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance followed a record eighth straight Atlantic Sun Conference championship.
FAU finished the regional 2-2 and advanced to the third day of play for the second straight season.
