TALLAHASSEE, FL - With its first no. 1 seed at an NCAA Regional, Florida Atlantic University fell victim to a no-hit performance in falling 3-0 to Chattanooga Thursday afternoon in Tallahassee, FL. Chattanooga, the no. 6 seed in the six-team, double-elimination regional, took advantage of a no-hitter by Beth Alexander, sending FAU to an elimination game Thursday night against Alabama.
FAU (60-12) managed just two base runners as Alexander struck out four and walked two. Both walks were to Heather Wright as the Lady Owls were unable to push a runner past second base.
Nikki Myers suffered just her seventh loss of the year as she consistently battled with runners on base. Chattanooga left a total of 10 runners on, including five in the first two innings before breaking through with an RBI-single by Paige Cochrane in the third inning. The Lady Mocs (43-13) added two more runs in the seventh to seal the victory.
"The FAU team that I've coached all season long did not come to the game today," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. "It's a situation where we have to come out and play because every team in every regional is good."
Myers fell to 35-7 on the year as she allowed three runs on seven hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts.
"Our team is better than that," said Myers. "We all know it. Now, we just have to prove it."
Florida Atlantic will next play Thursday night at 8:00pm against Alabama in an elimination game.
