BOCA RATON, Fla. - A dramatic comeback proved futile as the Florida Atlantic softball team fell to North Texas 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday in the first round of the Conference USA Championship.
The game was scoreless in the top of the third inning when NT scored four runs on four hits and an error to take a 4-0 lead. FAU mounted a rally in the bottom of the fourth when Christina Martinez singled to right, followed by a Melissa Martinez walk. Jordan Stovall beat out an infield single to load the bases for Shelby Knox. Knox's sacrifice fly scored Christina Martinez and brought Mickey Bell to the plate. Bell rocketed a pitch over the left field fence to tie the score 4-4.
The score remained tied until the top of the 10th when a base hit drove in the go ahead run for North Texas. Lindsey Shell singled down the left field line and stole second in the bottom of the inning, but was ultimately left stranded. FAU's record fell to 33-22 in the loss.
FAU is expected to return five everyday starters and its entire pitching staff for the 2015 season.
