BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team lost its regular season finale to FIU 2-0 on Saturday.
The game was a pitchers' duel between FIU's Jennifer Gniadek and Florida Atlantic's Stephanie Call. Call was perfect through 3.2 innings while Gniadek consistently pitched out of trouble for most of the game.
The Owls (15-37, 5-18 Sun Belt) had several opportunities to score, but couldn't crack the deadlock. FIU (27-25, 15-9) had its leadoff runner reach second on an infield single and an FAU error in the top of the fifth, but Call was able to work her way out of the jam.
FIU's Ashley McClain provided the only runs of the game with a two-run homerun in the sixth inning. Gniadek sat FAU down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game. Western Kentucky's doubleheader sweep of Middle Tennessee on Saturday put FAU into the Sun Belt tournament as the no. 8 seed. The Owls will face no .1 seed Louisiana-Lafayette in a first-round game on Wednesday. Game time is still to be determined.
