BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team ended the regular season in style, defeating rival FIU 3-0 on Senior Night. Stephanie Call, Taylor Fawbush and Diandra Fernandez were honored prior to the game and their mothers took part in a ceremonial first pitch.
The Owls (27-27, 10-12 Sun Belt) got on the board early, when Lindsey Shell led off the bottom of the first inning with a double, advanced on a Melissa Martinez sacrifice bunt and scored on a Call single to center.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Carnesha Thompson hit a leadoff homerun to left put FAU ahead 2-0. Another solo homerun, this one to right field by Call, provided the final margin of victory. Call made the most of her final home game, going 2-for-3 with a homerun and 2 RBI at the plate as well as throwing a complete game one-hitter with five strikeouts in the circle.
FAU will head to Troy, AL for the Sun Belt tournament as the fifth seed, where they will face fourth-seeded North Texas in a first round game on Wednesday. Game time is yet to be announced. Live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
