BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team lost to rival FIU 6-3 on Friday night.
The Panthers (26-25, 14-9 Sun Belt) did their damage early, scoring all six of their runs in the first three innings. A three-run second inning was enough to chase FAU's starter Stephanie Call from the circle. In the bottom of the second, Lauren Tremblay hit her first career homerun to put FAU on the board and cut the lead to 4-1.
FIU scored its final two runs of the game in the top of the third to make the score 6-1. An RBI single by Tremblay and a Panther fielding error gave the Owls two more runs to make the score 6-3 after four. The Owls' were unable to threaten FIU for the rest of the game.
The loss means FAU no longer controls its own destiny for the final spot in the Sun Belt tournament. If Middle Tennessee sweeps its doubleheader with Western Kentucky on Saturday, FAU will be eliminated. If MT and WKU split the doubleheader, the Owls will have to win its season finale against FIU to make the tournament field. A WKU sweep automatically puts the Owls in the field of eight.
Saturday's game begins at 6 p.m. and live stats and audio will be available for both games at www.fausports.com.
