MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senior leadership was the difference as the Florida Atlantic softball team swept a doubleheader from Middle Tennessee on Saturday. The sweep clinched a spot in the Conference USA Tournament for the Owls. FAU won the two games 8-0 and 5-3.
Whitley Herb led off game one with an infield single before scoring on a Jordan Stovall triple. Shelby Knox drove in Stovall to put the Owls (32-21, 14-9 C-USA) up 2-0. Melissa Martinez drove in Herb on a fielder's choice in the top of the second, before Stovall crushed homerun to left center that gave FAU a 5-0 lead.
Carnesha Thompson doubled, stole third, and then scored on a Blue Raider throwing error to make the score 6-0 in favor of the Owls in the third inning. Melissa Martinez had her second and third RBI of the day when she doubled in Kathryn Spack and Herb, scoring the final two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Middle Tennessee (10-44, 2-20) had runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Samantha Messer was able to shut down both potential rallies. Messer improved to 15-7 on the year.
Spack put the Owls up 1-0 in the second inning of game number two, plating Thompson on a base hit to right center. A three-run MT homerun gave them the lead in the bottom of the third. Stovall cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, but the Owls still trailed 3-2 and were down to their final strike in the top of the seventh when Knox laced a three-run double to right center, scoring Stovall, Melissa and Christina Martinez and putting FAU ahead 5-3. Amanda Wilson retired the Blue Raiders in order in the bottom of the inning to complete the comeback.
The Owls' seniors accounted for 11 hits, nine RBI, and seven runs on the day.
