TROY, AL - Florida Atlantic University split a doubleheader with Troy State University Saturday afternoon in Troy, AL. FAU won the first game, 2-0, before dropping the second, 2-0. Candice Freel pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game while Jessica Braggins hit her team-leading seventh homer. FAU, which is no. 26 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top-25, is now 46-15 overall and 13-3 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
In the first game, FAU broke out on top in the second inning. Braggins led off with a single. With one out, Callie Piper singled, and Amy Bellisari followed with an infield single to load the bases. After a pop-up for the second out, Christina Thompson singled to right to drive in Braggins with the first run of the game.
In the fourth, Braggins led off and lined the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for her seventh home run of the season to make it 2-0.
In the circle, Freel dominated the Lady Trojan lineup. After allowing a single in the first, she retired the next 12 batters she faced before TSU put runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth. Freel then forced Tara Blackwell into a pop-up to retire the side.
TSU (33-27, 15-5 A-Sun) tried to rally in the seventh with runners at first and third with two outs, courtesy of a single and an error. Melissa Maher grounded into a fielder's choice as Bellisari flipped to Jenna Lopez for a force-out at second to end the game.
Freel improved to 22-7 on the season and lowered her ERA to 0.75. She struck out two and walked two.
The difference in the second game was a two-run homer by Tamra Howren in the bottom of the sixth. The drive hit off the top of the fence and bounced over to give TSU the eventual 2-0 win.
Florida Atlantic concludes its road trip Monday afternoon at Jacksonville in a doubleheader at 1:00pm.
