MONROE, LA - Alexa Ballard's first career homerun was part of a four RBI game for the freshman in the Florida Atlantic softball team's 6-3 win over ULM on Sunday. The win snapped the Owls' six game losing streak.
Ballard put FAU (14-34, 4-15 Sun Belt) on the board in the first, with an RBI single to right center that scored Jordan Stovall. ULM took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Roxy Cassel. Kayla Boening added to the Warhawk lead in the second with a double to drive in Mackenzie Miller.
With two outs in the top of the third, Taylor Fawbush drew a walk and Stovall doubled to left to bring Ballard up to bat. She crushed a pitch over the left field wall to regain the lead for FAU 4-3. Stephanie Call then came to the plate and hit one deep to left for her team leading fifth homerun of the year and increased the lead to 5-3.
That duo would combine in the fifth for the final run of the game as Ballard walked and then Call stroked a base hit to right. The ULM outfielder misplayed the ball and allowed Ballard to come all the way around to score. The Warhawks' best chance to score again was in the bottom of the inning when they had runners on first and second with just one out, but a fielder's choice and a flyout to right ended the inning.
Taylor Fawbush gave up just two earned runs while picking up her team best sixth win of the season.
FAU will return to Boca Raton for this weekend's series against Middle Tennessee. The three-game set will go a long way in determining which team will advance to the conference tournament. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. and live stats and audio will be available at www.fausports.com.
