BOCA RATON, Fla. - Jordan Stovall had a huge day at the plate as the Florida Atlantic softball team won both games of a doubleheader from UTEP on Friday. It was Senior Day as FAU's four seniors were recognized before the first game. FAU took the first game 7-0 and game two 2-0.
In the first inning of game one, Stovall doubled down the line to score Christina Martinez before coming around to score on a Mickey Bell single, putting the Owls up 2-0. That score lasted until the fifth inning when Bell doubled in Shelby Knox. Sara Rotunno replaced Bell at second base, scoring on a Lindsey Shell single, making the score 4-0. The final run of the inning came when Whitley Herb beat out an infield single, allowing Kathryn Spack to score.
FAU (29-21, 11-9 C-USA) added two more runs in the sixth inning, when Knox doubled in Stovall, followed by a Carnesha Thompson single that plated Knox. Samantha Messer went the distance for her 13th win of the year.
Herb led off the bottom of the first inning of game number two with a base hit to left field. Stovall came up with two outs and smacked her second homerun of the season over the fence in left center. That was all the help Kylee Hanson would need. The freshman held the Miners (15-29, 7-10) to just three hits while striking out seven batters.
UTEP's best chance to score came in the sixth inning, when the first two batters singled. Hanson was able to retire the next three batters to escape unscathed.
Stovall went 4-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored on the day.
The Owls will try for the series sweep at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Live stats and video of the game will be available at fausports.com.
