BOCA RATON, FL - A hot offensive start by the Florida Atlantic University softball team could not withstand a sloppy defensive effort as the Owls lost to FIU 11-8 on Wednesday night.
The Owls (25-25, 8-10 Sun Belt) found themselves in an early deficit, as Amber Curry led off the game with a homerun to center to put FIU (27-21, 10-8) ahead 1-0. FAU answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning, four coming on a grand slam by Alexa Ballard. RBI singles by Carnesha Thompson and Jordan Stovall accounted for the other two runs.
FIU scratched across a run in the second to cut the lead to 6-2. The Panthers' big inning came in the third, when they scored eight runs on five hits and two Owl errors. An RBI single in the fifth stretched the lead to 11-6. Melissa Martinez led off the bottom of the sixth with a homerun to left to make the score 11-7.
Thompson led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, followed by a Laura Mann single to right center. Stovall reached on a fielder's choice, but a Panther throwing error allowed Thompson to score. After a groundout, Kathryn Spack drew a walk to load the bases and Martinez reached on another FIU error to load the bases, but a 6-3 putout ended the game.
FAU returns to the diamond this weekend for a three game set against Louisiana-Lafayette. The series starts with a doubleheader at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Live stats will be available at www.fausports.com and tickets can be purchased by calling the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
