BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team split its doubleheader with Troy on Saturday night.
The Owls (13-28, 3-9 Sun Belt) lost game one 5-4. Both teams had chances to score, but neither could break through until the fourth inning, when the Trojans scored two runs on a single to left center. The lead doubled in the fifth with two more runs for the visitors.
FAU finally got in the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth when an RBI double by Jordan Stovall scored Heather Barnes. Troy hit a homerun in the top of the sixth to push the margin back to four, 5-1. Carly Speerin doubled in Sarah Howell to make the score 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth. After retiring Troy in order in the top of the seventh, Stephanie Call hit a two-run homerun to right center to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Owls had the tying run on third base, but couldn't drive it in.
In game two, Troy (26-16, 6-9) again drew first blood, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Hayden Gann. FAU scored twice in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Stovall and Laura Mann to take a 2-1 lead. The Owls played small ball for their run in the second. Alison Milam led off the inning with a single, then Lindsey Shell bunted herself onto first. Speerin sacrificed both runners over a base, putting runners on second and third. An attempted squeeze play was unsuccessful, resulting in Milam being thrown out at the plate. Shell, however, was able to score after Taylor Fawbush drew a throw while advancing to second.
The Trojans had already scored a run and had a runner at second in the third inning, but Milam made a running catch of a line drive and then threw to second to double off the runner and end the threat. FAU's big inning came in the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs, two coming on a bases loaded single by Laura Mann.
Sam Messer gave up just six hits in her fourth complete game of the season to pick up the win.
Troy and FAU will meet in the rubber game of the series at noon on Sunday. Then, at 6 p.m. the Owls will play a team of local Marines in a game that will raise money for the Semper Fi Fund and raise awareness for FAU Veteran Owls, an on-campus organization that helps FAU students that have served in the armed forces adjust to campus life. Live stats and audio of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
