FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team split a doubleheader with Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night. The Owls lost game one 2-1 and won game two 3-1.
All the first game's runs came in the fourth inning. Mickey Bell drove in Melissa Martinezwith a sacrifice fly to left. The Eagles (23-20-1) took the lead in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homerun over the fence in right.
Jordan Stovall and Shelby Knox had back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the sixth, but a double play ended the threat. Samantha Messertook the tough luck loss. In the second game, FGCU took a 1-0 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly of its own. The Owls (25-20) immediately answered with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Lindsey Shellled off with an infield single, followed by a Stovall walk. Knox's second hit of the day, combined with an Eagle error put FAU ahead 2-1. Knox scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to account for the final tally.
Kylee Hansonthrew a complete game, not allowing an earned run and retiring 14 of the final 15 batters to pick up her sixth win of the season.
The Owls resume Conference USA play with a three-game series at Charlotte. The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon. Live stats of the game will be available at fausports.com.
