TROY, AL - Laura Mann's two-run double was the key hit in the Florida Atlantic softball team's 5-3 win over Troy on Sunday. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for FAU.
The Owls (25-24, 8-9 Sun Belt) fell behind early when Troy hit a homerun to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. FAU tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Carnesha Thompson and a base hit by Jordan Stovall that scored Stephanie Call.
Shelby Knox and Lindsey Shell sandwiched singles around Melissa Martinez being hit by a pitch to load the bases for Mann. Mann lifted a double to center to drive in Knox and Martinez to give the Owls a 4-3 lead. Shell scored an insurance run on a Trojan error later in the inning.
Troy (18-20, 6-5) had already scored a run and had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth inning when Call relieved Taylor Fawbush in the circle. Christina Martinez made a running catch of a Trojan liner and was able to double off the runner at first to end the inning.
Call had to work out of another jam in the seventh, when the Trojans had the runners on second and third with just one out. Thompson snagged a liner in center and Shell caught a fly ball in foul territory for the final out of the game.
Fawbush went 5.1 innings for her team best 12th win of the season, while Call got the last five outs for her first save of the year. At the plate, Shell went 3-for-5, while Shelby Knox went 2-for-4. The Owls will take some time off before hosting rival FIU in a single game on Wednesday, April 17. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
