BOCA RATON, FL - Ginny Matthews had six hits and three RBIs as no. 11 Florida Atlantic University swept a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Troy State University. The Lady Owls won the first game 6-5 in 11 innings before taking game two 3-0. The wins improve FAU to 44-7 on the season and 7-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference while extending the team's winning streak to six games.
In the first game, FAU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Ninya Ybarra led off with a single and was moved up to second on a sacrifice by Heather Wright. After an intentional walk to Nikki Myers and a fielder's choice made it two outs with runners at first and third, Ginny Matthews delivered a single to right that scored Ybarra. Matthews ended up 4-for-5 in game one with two RBIs.
The Trojans came back in the second when Kami Marrott hit a one-out two-run homer to give TSU a 2-1 lead. They tried to increase that lead in the fifth, but Matthews threw out Jenny Boyd at home trying to score from second on a two-out single by Mindy Porep.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Candice Freel helped her cause with a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, after Myers came in to relieve Freel with two outs and runners on first and second, Myers walked the next two batters to force in the go-ahead run that put TSU on top 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Myers led off with a single to center and was replaced by pinch-runner Jennifer Piazza. One out later, Matthews doubled down the left field line to drive home Piazza from first and tie the game at 3-3.
A two-out single by Pam Mazzarrella in the bottom of the 11th scored Michelle Ryan with the winning run to give the Lady Owls a 6-5 victory.
Myers (25-4) picked up the win in relief, going four and one-third innings and allowing two runs, one earned. She struck out three and walked three. Freel went six and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits.
In game two, Matthews had a bases-loaded single in the third inning to put the Lady Owls up 1-0. In the fifth, after a lead-off walk to Wright, Myers connected for her team-leading ninth home run to put FAU up 3-0.
Freel (19-3) would make the lead stand up as the freshman threw her eighth shutout of the year and 17th complete game. She allowed four hits and struck out four.
Florida Atlantic next takes part in a six-game A-Sun road trip that begins April 11 with a doubleheader at Samford.
