DENTON, TX - The Florida Atlantic softball team split a doubleheader with North Texas on Friday.
The Owls (12-26, 2-7 Sun Belt) won game one 5-3 in eight innings. The game was a pitchers' duel for most of the contest. Jordan Stovall broke a scoreless tie with a solo shot to straightaway center field in the top of the sixth inning. After an Alexa Ballard infield single, Carly Speerin homered down the line in left to put FAU up 3-0.
Taylor Fawbush held North Texas (16-18-1, 7-6-1) hitless for 5.2 innings and scoreless until the bottom of the seventh with Jackie Miller hit a game tying homerun to left field. Stephanie Call and Stovall led off the eighth inning with back-to-back singles. After a Ballard sacrifice moved over both Call and Whitley Herb, who entered as a pinch runner, Speerin successfully executed a suicide squeeze to score Call. Herb later scored when Speerin, who reached on the fielders' choice, managed to get caught in a rundown. Fawbush retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.
In game two, North Texas led 3-0 after three with all the runs unearned. The Mean Green added five runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the game via the mercy rule. FAU struggled offensively in game two, managing only two hits in the game.
The two teams will meet in the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. eastern. Live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
