BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University split a non-conference doubleheader with Florida International University Sunday afternoon at FAU Field in Boca Raton, FL. In the first game, Callie Piper had a two-out single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run in a 2-1 win. FIU came back to win game two, 2-1. FAU, which is receiving votes in both national polls, is now 38-13 on the year while FIU moves to 18-23.

The first game was a pitchers' duel throughout as Candice Freel turned in yet another strong performance. The game was scoreless into the fourth inning. Pam Mazzarella led off the bottom of the frame with a double to right center. She advanced to third on a sacrifice by Freel and came home on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Braggins to make it 1-0.

FIU's Brittany Witherow had an RBI-single in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. FAU came back in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win. With one out, Ginny Matthews and Christina Thompson singled to put runners at first and second. Jessica Sachs flied to right to advance the runners to second and third. Piper then singled up the middle to drive in Matthews and give FAU the 2-1 victory.

Freel (18-6) won her 12th straight game behind a five-hit performance. She allowed one run and struck out nine with one walk.

In game two, FIU scored two runs in the top of the second which proved to be just enough as Amanda Nealer threw a three-hitter. FAU scored an unearned run in the seventh when Lauren Evans came across with one out via two fielding errors on the same play. Nealer, though, retired the next two Owls to end the game.

Florida Atlantic next faces Campbell in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader, April 10, in Boca Raton.
