MIAMI, FL - Florida Atlantic University stayed perfect on the year against Florida International University with a 2-0 victory Wednesday night in Miami, FL. The non-conference win improves FAU to 35-12 on the year with the Owls owning a 5-0 mark against the Golden Panthers (17-22). FAU's runs proved to be more than enough behind another dominating performance by Candice Freel, who won her 10th straight game.
FAU manufactured a run in the top of the first inning. Jessica Sachs led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Lauren Evans. She came around to score on a double by Pam Mazzarella to make it 1-0 FAU. Jennifer Cavanaugh drove in the other run in the sixth with a two-out double that scored Marlene Lopez.
In the circle, Freel frustrated FIU hitters all night long. She scattered three infield singles and allowed only two balls out of the infield. She struck out six and walked three.
Freel completed the month of March with a perfect 10-0 record and a 0.45 ERA. She leads the Owls with a 16-6 record and a 0.91 ERA. The shutout was Freel's seventh and the Owls' 15th.
FAU outhit FIU 7-3. Sachs had three hits, all on bunts, while Jenn Piazza added two.
Florida Atlantic next hosts Gardner-Webb Friday night at 6:00pm in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader at FAU field.
