BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University was swept by Florida International University in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at FAU Field in Boca Raton, FL. The Lady Owls dropped the first game, 2-1, before falling, 1-0, in the finale. The losses drop FAU to 20-21 overall while FIU improved to 22-19.
In game one, FAU took a 1-0 lead when Amy Bellisari reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Jennifer Cavanaugh from third. The lead was short-lived, though, as Marleah Staph blasted a two-run double to left field in the top of the fourth to account for the game's final runs. FAU mounted a threat in the seventh but stranded runners at first and second.
In game two, Nicole Dubovik singled home Yarah Otero with two outs to give FIU a 1-0 lead. That would be all the Golden Panthers would need as FIU's Amanda Nealer allowed just one hit in throwing the complete-game shutout.
Candice Freel (10-7) suffered the loss in game one for FAU. She allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Pam Mazzarella (2-3) received the decision in game two. She allowed one unearned run on five hits in 4 and two-thirds innings of work. Freel came on in relief and allowed just two hits the rest of the way.
At the plate, Cavanaugh had two of FAU's five total hits. She collected both in the first game. Jessica Sachs' had FAU's lone hit in the second game, a single in the third.
The sweep for FIU was the first ever over the Lady Owls at FAU in the teams' 37-game history.
Florida Atlantic next faces Campbell in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader Wednesday in Buies Creek, NC.
