BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University, ranked no. 10 nationally, split an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader with the University of Central Florida Friday night. The Lady Owls fell 3-0 in the first game before cruising to a 6-0 victory in the night cap as Nikki Myers had a season-high 17 strikeouts while throwing a one-hitter.
In the second game, Rhianna Rogers connected for her second homer of the year in the third to put FAU (39-7, 3-1 A-Sun) up 1-0. In the fourth, Ginny Matthews singled home Myers to score FAU's second run. The Lady Owls broke the game open in the sixth with four more runs. The big hit in that frame was a two-run triple by Rogers. Callie Piper also drove in a run. That would prove to be more than enough for Myers (22-4), who picked up her 11th shutout of the season. Myers allowed just one hit and two base runners. She retired the last nine hitters she faced, eight on strikeouts. Rogers finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Matthews finished the night 3-for-5 while Myers went 3-for-6. Pam Mazzarella also picked up two hits.
In the first game, UCF (33-12, 5-1 A-Sun) scored twice in the second and once in the fourth to account for the game's only runs. FAU managed just four base runners on four hits in the game. Candice Freel (17-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, in seven innings of work. She gave up six hits and struck out two. UCF's Dottie Cupp (18-2) secured the win, allowing four hits, striking out five with no walks in the shutout.
