BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team lost both games of its doubleheader to North Texas, 6-0 and 7-2 on Wednesday.
In the first game, the Owls (24-20, 7-5 Sun Belt) fell behind 2-0 in the second inning on back-to-back hits by North Texas (18-14, 6-4). FAU struggled offensively, managing just four hits and having just one runner reach third base. The Mean Green added four more runs in the fifth inning for the final margin of victory.
North Texas took another early lead in the second game, scoring a run on a successful double steal in the top of the first. The Owls answered in the bottom of the second, with RBI by Kathryn Spack and Lindsey Shell putting them ahead 2-1. FAU had the potential to add to its lead, but Shell tripped while trying to return to third on a ball that got away from the catcher and was tagged out.
FAU had trouble with baserunning all game, as miscues stymied potential rallies in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Defensively, Stephanie Call spent most of the latter portion of the game pitching out of trouble. That finally caught up with the Owls in the eighth when the Mean Green broke the game open with five runs in the top of the inning.
The Owls will take the weekend off before heading to Alabama for a six-game road trip, beginning with a doubleheader versus South Alabama on Wednesday, April 3. Live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
