NASHVILLE, TN - Florida Atlantic University (33-11) began its Atlantic Sun Conference schedule Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Belmont University in Nashville, TN. The Owls defeated the Bruins, 6-1, in game one before taking an 8-1 decision in game two. The wins extended FAU's winning streak to nine games, its longest since winning 11 straight midway through the 2002 season.
Jessica Sachs led off the first game with a home run to left field, her fourth homer of the season. FAU held the 1-0 lead into the fourth when Ginny Matthews had a run-scoring double with two outs to make it 2-0.
The Owls blew the game open with four runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Callie Piper doubled to drive in two runs. With one out, Jenn Piazza singled to drive in two more as the Owls led 6-0.
Amanda Morin (14-5) picked up the complete-game win. She allowed one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Game two was scoreless into the third inning. Lauren Evans led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Matthews. Christina Thompson followed with a single up the middle to drive in Evans with the game's first run.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins loaded the bases with no outs. Candice Freel then struck out the next two batters and forced a groundout to end the inning unscathed.
The Owls added two more in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. Jennifer Cavanaugh drove in the first run with a walk to make it 4-1. Braggins then hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 5-1. FAU scored three more in the seventh. Thompson had another RBI-single to help the Owls build an 8-1 advantage.
Freel (14-6) pitched five innings to pick up her eighth straight win. She allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
FAU collected nine hits in game one and 11 in game two. Matthews, Sachs, and Thompson all had three hits. Braggins, Evans, Piazza, and Piper each had two hits. Braggins drove in a total of three runs, and Thompson, Piper, and Piazza had two RBIs.
Florida Atlantic concludes its road trip Saturday with a doubleheader at Lipscomb University in Nashville that begins at 1:00pm CST.
