BOCA RATON, FL - Laura Mann drove in the game winning runs in both of the Florida Atlantic softball team's wins on Sunday. The victories, over Dartmouth and Elon completed a 6-0 Parents' Weekend Tournament for the Owls.
FAU (23-18) defeated Dartmouth 2-1 in eight innings in the first game of the day. The Owls' Taylor Fawbush and the Big Green's Katie Adams both pitched a shutout through seven innings. FAU had a chance to end the game, with a runner on third and two out in the seventh, but a popped up bunt resulted in an inning ending double play. The international tiebreaker went into play in the eight and Dartmouth scored on a sacrifice bunt followed by a base hit to take a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Kathryn Spack drove in Whitley Herb to tie the score at 2-2. The Owls loaded the bases in the inning, but a popout loss ended the threat. Dartmouth had a runner on third with just one out in the top of the ninth inning, but Fawbush began a double play that kept the Big Green off the scoreboard. Stephanie Call began the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice bunt that moved Christina Martinez to third base. Mann came to the plate and her hit to right field scored Call and gave FAU the win.
In the second game, the Owls defeated Elon 5-3.The Phoenix scored two runs in the top of the first on back-to-back base hits to take a 2-0 lead. That score stood until the bottom of the third, when Christina Martinez drove in Carnesha Thompson with a triple down the line in right to pull within 2-1. Elon pushed the margin back to two at 3-1 in the top of the fourth with an RBI triple of its own.
