BOCA RATON, FL - Taylor Fawbush threw the 22nd no-hitter in FAU history, picked up a save and went 5-for-7 at the plate to help the Florida Atlantic softball team split a doubleheader with South Alabama on Saturday.
Fawbush put the Owls (11-24, 1-5 Sun Belt) on the board in the bottom of the first inning in game one, driving in Heather Barnes with an RBI triple to put FAU ahead 1-0. Fawbush was perfect in the circle through 3.2 innings, before loading the bases in the top of the fourth. She was able to induce a grounder, but a fielding error allowed the tying run to score.
Fawbush singled to center field in the fifth, but Barnes was ruled out trying to score on the play on a call that drew fierce argument from the FAU dugout. The Jaguars scored two more times in the sixth, helped by a hit by pitch, a walk and two Owl errors. USA scored three runs despite not recording a hit and won game one 3-1.
In the nightcap, FAU once again took an early lead, Fawbush had another RBI hit, this one a double to plate Barnes and put the Owls up 1-0 in the first. Jordan Stovall drove in Fawbush later in the inning to push the lead to 2-0. USA cut the lead in half in the second, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly. Whitley Herb's RBI infield single put FAU back up by two, 3-1. Alexa Ballard scored on the play.
The Jaguars (18-9, 6-2) wouldn't go away and answered right back in the top of the fifth, scoring on an RBI single by Alyssa Linn to pull within 3-2. Fawbush led off the bottom of the fifth with her third hit of the game before giving way to Lindsey Shell as a pinchrunner. Stovall drove in Shell with an RBI double to left.
