BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Florida Atlantic University softball team defeated Southern Miss 7-2 on Sunday. The win gave the Owls the series win over the Golden Eagles. USM (14-16, 5-4 C-USA) got on the board with in the top of the first inning. Shelbee Rodgers reached on a leadoff walk, advanced on a groundout and then scored on back-to-back singles to take a 1-0 lead.
FAU (22-15, 5-4) responded in the bottom of the first, Whitley Herb and Christina Martinez both singled to start the inning, before Lindsey Shell moved them over on a sacrifice bunt. Melissa Martinez grounded out to score Herb and tie the game. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the second with no outs, but only managed one run, with a fielder's choice retiring the lead runner at the plate and Christina Martinez catching a fly out in center, and throwing a runner out at the plate to end the threat.
In the bottom of the second, the Owls scored four runs with two outs in the frame. Carnesha Thompson's bunt single scored Delaney Rickey, who was pinch running for Mickey Bell to tie the game. After a Herb walk, Christina Martinez doubled to left, driving in Thompson and Herb, before coming around to score herself on a Lindsey Shell double down the line in left.
After a leadoff double and a hit by pitch, Amanda Wilson relieved Samantha Messer in the circle and was able to keep FAU's lead at 5-2. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jordan Stovall rounded out the scoring with a ground-rule double over the fence in right center, plating Herb and Shell.
Messer picked up her 11th win of the year as the Owls went 3-1 in their four games this week. FAU will travel to Louisiana Tech to face the Lady Techsters for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29. The first game will start at 3 p.m. eastern.
