BOCA RATON, FL - Pam Mazzarella drove in the go-ahead run in both games as Florida Atlantic University defeated Minnesota and Florida International Saturday at the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Invitational in Boca Raton. The no. 11 Lady Owls downed Minnesota 4-1 before defeating FIU 2-0. The wins improve FAU to 37-6 on the season and give the Lady Owls 27 wins in their past 30 games.
Against no. 23 Minnesota, Nikki Myers put FAU on top 1-0 in the top of the first with a two out home run to left field, her fifth of the year. Meanwhile, Myers took a no-hitter into the fourth before Jordanne Nygren connected for a home run to left to tie the game 1-1.
FAU rallied for a run in the top of the fifth after Michelle Shirah led off the inning by reaching on an error. With two outs and Shirah at second, Minnesota elected to intentionally walk Myers. The first pitch was a wild pitch that sent Shirah to third. After a pitching change and the intentional pass, Mazzerella singled to score Shirah and put the Lady Owls on top 2-1.
Nygren came up again in the sixth with two outs and runners on the corners before Myers fanned her for her eighth strikeout.
The Lady Owls added insurance runs in the seventh on back-to-back homers by Ninya Ybarra and Wright. For Ybarra, it was her team-leading eighth homer while Wright connected for her second of the season.
Myers (20-4) allowed two hits and struck out 10 to become the team's first 20-game winner of the season.
Against FIU, Mazzarella hit a two-out single that scored Wright for what turned out to be all the Lady Owls would need. A two-out RBI-single by Wright in the fifth gave FAU a 2-0 lead. Wright finished the day 3-for-6 with 2 RBIs and two runs.
Candice Freel picked up the win against FIU to improve to 17-2 on the year. She allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out six.
