BOCA RATON, FL - No. 11 Florida Atlantic University split two games against ranked opponents Friday in the first day of action at the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Invitational. The Lady Owls fell to no. 23 Minnesota, 2-1, before defeating no. 14 Iowa 2-1 in the evening. The contests mark the fourth straight time FAU (35-6) has taken on a ranked opponent.
Against Iowa (12-9), Ninya Ybarra gave FAU a 1-0 lead with a line drive homer to straight-away centerfield in the third. The Hawkeyes tied the game in the fifth on a two-out single by Jessica Bashor. The Lady Owls responded with the go-ahead run in the sixth on a bases loaded infield single by Callie Piper.
Candce Freel (16-2) pced up the win, going six innings and scattering nine hits. Nikki Myers came on in the seventh to pick up her fourth save of the year.
Against Minnesota, the Gophers took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. FAU tied the score in the third on a solo home run by Freel, the first collegiate homer for the freshman. The game remained 1-1 into the seventh before Minnesota scored an unearned run to account for the game's final score.
Myers (19-4) suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run in seven innings of work. She allowed seven hits, struck out eight with no walks. UM's Piper Marten picked up the win as she two-hit the Lady Owls. Aside from Freel's homer, FAU's only other hit was a single by Pam Mazzarella in the second.
The round robin tournament continues Saturday as FAU takes on Minnesota at 1:00pm
and Florida International at 4:00pm.
