BOCA RATON, FL - For the third straight time this week, no. 11 Florida Atlantic University squared off with no. 23 Minnesota, and for the first time, Minnesota defeated the Lady Owls. FAU (34-6) suffered the 2-1 setback in Friday afternoon's opening game of the 2002 FAU "Parents' Weekend" Invitational in Boca Raton.
The Gophers took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. FAU tied the score in the third on a solo home run by Candice Freel, the first collegiate homer for the freshman. The game remained 1-1 into the seventh before Minnesota scored an unearned run to account for the game's final score.
Nikki Myers (19-4) suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run in seven innings of work. She allowed seven hits, struck out eight with no walks. UM's Piper Marten picked up the win as she two-hit the Lady Owls. Aside from Freel's homer, FAU's only other hit was a single by Pam Mazzarella in the second.
Florida Atlantic next takes on Iowa later Friday evening in the final game of the tournament's opening day.
