BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University won its season-high seventh straight game in a 3-1 victory over Florida International in the championship game of the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Tournament Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, FL. It's the third consecutive tournament the Owls have won as they improved to 31-11 on the year. FAU has won 16 of its past 18 games.
FAU scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Jessica Sachs, who was named tournament MVP, led off with a bunt-single. After a one-out walk to Pam Mazzarella and a passed ball, Candice Freel blooped a single into short centerfield to drive in Sachs and Mazzarella.
In the third, Freel added a one-out double to drive in Ginny Matthews which made it 3-0 FAU. FIU (15-17) came back to score an unearned run in the sixth before Freel closed the door in the seventh.
Freel (13-6) won her seventh straight decision. She allowed one unearned run on just three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. She also went 2-for-3 and drove in all three of FAU's runs.
Sachs finished the tournament 11-for-19 with six RBIs and four runs scored. Her effort included a grand slam against Oklahoma State on Friday night.
FAU, which is receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top-25, now turns its attention to Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Lady Owls, who have won a record seven consecutive A-Sun championships, begin conference action March 26 with a doubleheader at Belmont.
