BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team banged out 11 hits in a 9-2 win over Connecticut on Thursday night.
The Owls (20-14) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Whitley Herb and Christina Martinez led off with back-to-back infield singles and advanced on Lindsey Shell's sacrifice bunt. After a lineout, Mickey Bell walked to bring Jordan Stovall to the plate. Stovall cleared the bases with a double to right center, putting FAU up 3-0.
The bases were loaded again in the third inning and Kathryn Spack drove in a run with a grounder to second. Shelby Knox followed with a two-run double, giving the Owls a 6-0 cushion. The Huskies (5-17), helped by two Owls errors, scored twice in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2.
Christina Martinez tripled in the fifth inning to drive in Knox and Laura Mann, but was thrown out at the plate, trying to complete an inside the park homerun. Mann ended the game's scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a double to center that allowed Stovall to score.
