BOCA RATON, FL - Jessica Braggins and Pam Mazzarella each drove in three runs as Florida Atlantic University defeated the University of Akron, 7-3, Saturday evening at the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Tournament in Boca Raton, FL. The game was the first of two on the day for the Owls (29-11). The win clinched a no. 1 seed for FAU heading into Sunday's championship. FAU will face Florida International at 1:00pm.
The Owls opened the scoring in the first inning when Braggins had an RBI-single with two outs to drive in Jessica Sachs. FAU broke it open in the third when the first seven Owls reached base. Mazzarella had the first big hit with a bases-loaded double that drove in three runs and made it 4-0. Braggins followed with a two-run homer, her fourth of the year, to give the Owls a 6-0 lead.
Candice Freel added an RBI-double in the fifth to make it 7-0. The Zips (12-8) scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to account for the game's final score.
In all, FAU collected 12 hits. Braggins went 2-for-3 while Mazzarella was 2-for-4. Freel went 2-for-3, and Sachs went 4-for-4 with two runs scored.
Freel (12-6) picked up her sixth straight win. She pitched five scoreless innings and gave up just two singles with six strikeouts.
Florida Atlantic faced Kent State late Saturday to conclude round-robin play.
