BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University started off its FAU "Parents' Weekend" Tournament with two victories Friday at FAU Field in Boca Raton, FL. The Owls came from behind to defeat Florida International, 4-3, before holding on for a 5-4 victory against Oklahoma State. Jessica Sachs hit a grand slam against OSU and drove in six runs on the day. FAU, which is receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top-25, improved to 28-11 on the year.

In the top of the first against FIU, Sachs led off and reached on an error. Pam Mazzarella drew a one-out walk, and, with two outs, Jessica Braggins had a two-run double to make it 2-0.

FIU came back and scored once in the second, third, and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead into the sixth. In the top of the sixth with the bases loaded, Sachs singled to drive in Christina Thompson and Jennifer Cavanaugh to put the Owls up 4-3.

Amanda Morin (12-5) picked up the complete-game victory. The sophomore allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. She struck out six and walked two.

Against OSU, the Owls scored five runs in the second inning. Candice Freel singled with one out and advanced to third on a double by Braggins. With two outs, Lauren Evans was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Thompson followed with a single to drive in Freel with the first run. Sachs then hit the first pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. The homer was her third of the season.

The Cowgirls scored twice in the fourth and put together a major threat in the fifth. The first three batters reached base before Freel struck out the next two batters. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Jade Lindly hit a slow roller to short where interference with the base runner ended the inning. OSU scored two runs in the top of the seventh before Freel closed the door with a strikeout of Lindly with a runner at second..

 

 

Freel (11-6) picked up her fifth straight victory. She allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Sachs and Braggins helped lead the FAU attack with a total of three hits on the day.

In other action on Friday, Akron defeated Kent State, 3-2. Oklahoma State defeated Kent State, 4-2. Also, FIU outlasted Akron, 4-1.

The tournament continues on Saturday and concludes Sunday. FAU faces Akron Saturday evening at 5pm and Kent State at 7pm.
