BOCA RATON, FL - Jenna Lopez scored the game's first run but the Florida Atlantic University softball team couldn't hold off no. 3/4 Texas A&M, as the Aggies scored two runs in the sixth to take a 3-1 victory in the championship game of the Parents' Weekend Tournament
Lopez scored after an errant throw by the Aggies following an infield single by starting pitcher Jen Musillo in the first inning. Lopez had reached on an infield single of her own and stole second to put herself in scoring position.
TAMU's starting pitcher Amanda Scarborough hit a solo home run to aide her cause in the second to tie the game at one. She would also retire 17 of the final 18 batters, striking out nine in the ball game and not allowing a ball out of the infield.
All three FAU hits were infield singles. Melissa Moore had the Owls' remaining hit. Musillo walked to lead off the seventh, snapping a streak of 14 straight Owls retired by Scarborough, but pinch-runner Ambar Jones was erased on a fielders choice, and the Owls were turned aside in the seventh. Scarborough (12-2) faced just four over the minimum.
Musillo (6-6) battled all game long, striking out five and walking one while scattering six hits, but couldn't overcome a throwing error in the sixth on a single that allowed one run to score and put another runner on third that eventually scored.
The Owls (17-12) split the season-series with the Aggies, after defeating them in yesterday's final game of round robin play. It was the program's highest-ranked defeated opponent.
The Owls finished at 3-2 on the weekend, and will face UMass at FAU Softball Stadium on Monday in a doubleheader, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
