BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Florida Atlantic softball team lost to Western Kentucky 2-1 in the final game of its three game series on Sunday.
The game was a pitchers' duel between the Owls' (14-18, 3-3 Sun Belt) Stephanie Call and WKU's (15-8, 5-1) Emily Rousseau. Both sides threatened on multiple occasions, but each time they were unable to register a run.
The Hilltoppers finally broke through with in the bottom of the fifth, when Amanda Thomas drove in Olivia Watkins to go ahead 1-0. FAU evened the score in the top of the sixth when Christina Martinez on an RBI double by her twin sister, Melissa Martinez. The Owls loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the threat.
WKU started the bottom of the seventh with a single and a walk, with both runners moving up on a groundout. A wild pitch allowed the Hilltoppers to score the winning run and complete the sweep.
The Owls will move on to play Middle Tennessee in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game is scheduled for 5p.m. Eastern. Live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
