BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Florida Atlantic softball team lost both games of its doubleheader to Western Kentucky 8-0 and 3-0 on Saturday.
The Owls (14-17, 3-2 Sun Belt) lost game one of the doubleheader 8-0. Western Kentucky got on the board in the second inning with back-to-back homeruns by Amanda Thomas and Kelsie Mattox. Thomas doubled in another run in the third to make the score 3-0. The Hilltoppers (14-8, 3-1) ended the game with five runs in the fifth to take the mercy rule victory.
In game two, WKU once again did its damage early, scoring all three runs on a homerun by Thomas. Stephanie Call entered the game in relief in the second inning and held the Hilltoppers scoreless the rest of the way. FAU's best chances to score came in the late innings. Carnesha Thompson led off the fourth inning with a base hit, but a double eventually erased the runner. Lindsey Shell had a two out hit in the sixth, but Thompson was robbed of an infield base hit, squashing any potential rally.
Christina Martinez led off the seventh with a single to center, but Call and Laura Mann were denied potential base hits by the Hilltopper defense. Melissa Martinez had infield single of her own, but a grounder ended the game.
FAU and WKU will meet in the final game of the series at 1 p.m. eastern on Sunday. Live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
