The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its doubleheader against UAB on Saturday, losing 4-3 in the first game and winning 3-1 in extra innings in the second game.
FAU (19-13, 3-2 C-USA) held a lead for the majority of the second game, scoring the first run in the top of the second. Melissa Martinez started off the inning with a single and advanced off of a Mickey Bell single to left field and a Kathryn Spack infield single before scoring on a Jordan Stovall single.
The Owls would hold UAB scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Blazers tied the game at 1-1 when Samantha Messer hit a batter with the bases loaded. The two teams remained deadlocked until the ninth inning, when Carnesha Thompson led off with a single through the left side and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Stovall singled to drive in Thompson. Stovall scored the final run of the game on a UAB throwing error.
FAU had a total of 12 hits in the game. Messer threw her seventh complete game of the season to improve her record to 9-3. Messer allowed only five hits, had four strikeouts and lowered her team-best ERA to 1.71.
In the first game of the day, UAB struck first and was able to hold onto their lead to claim the victory. The Blazers scored all four runs in the bottom of the first off of two home runs to left center. FAU answered in the top of the second, scoring two runs. Bell singled to right center to start off the inning. Delaney Rickey came in to pinch run for Bell and advanced to second off of a Thompson sacrifice bunt. Spack then hit her first career home run to score Rickey.
FAU scored its third and final run in the top of the fourth with two outs. Herb singled and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Christina Martinez, who went 3-for-4 in the game, singled up the middle to score Herb. Shell and Thompson also recorded a hit in the game.
Kylee Hanson gave up five hits and had four strikeouts while throwing a complete game.
The Owls will face UAB on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Birmingham in the rubber game of the series. They will be back home on March 20 where they will face Connecticut at 6 p.m. at FAU Softball Stadium.
