BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University (32-5) swept a doubleheader with Rhode Island Friday night in Boca Raton. The no. 11 Lady Owls cruised to an 8-1 victory in game one before dealing the Rams a 7-1 setback in game two. FAU had a total of 22 hits in just 12 innings at the plate while scoring in eight of those innings.

FAU banged out five extra base hits in the first game while scoring in all but two innings they batted in. FAU took a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring double by Pam Mazzarella that plated Heather Wright. FAU broke the game open in the second when, with two outs and the bases loaded, Nikki Myers drove a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 6-0 lead. Myers finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer and a double and four RBIs.

Other extra base hits for FAU included a lead-off triple by Jessica Fernandez in the sixth. She would later score on a one-out double by Jennifer Piazza.

Candace Freel picked up the complete game victory (14-2), allowing just one run on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, URI took a 1-0 lead in the first that was quickly erased by a lead-off, opposite field homer in the bottom of the inning by Ninya Ybarra.

FAU broke the 1-1 tie in the third when Jennifer Piazza singled home Pam Mazzarella with two outs to put the Lady Owls on top 2-1.

Florida Atlantic put the game away in the fifth with four runs on five hits, including four straight singles on their way to a 7-1 victory.

 

 

Myers (18-3) went the distance in game two, allowing one run on four hits while striking out 12 and walking just one. At the plate, Myers went 4-for-7 on the evening.

Wright went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and three runs while Mazzarella went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. There was plenty of hitting to go around as Jennifer Piazza went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader with two RBIs. Ginny Matthews had a pair of hits as well.

Florida Atlantic next faces Minnesota March 19 at 6:00pm.
