Florida Atlantic University (30-5) defeated the University of North Carolina (12-13) in a doubleheader on Thursday night defeating the Tar Heels 2-1 and 7-1. The No. 11 Lady Owls never trailed in the two games.
Game one saw freshman Candice Freel get the win. She pitched the complete game and struck out 10 to improve her record to 13-2. Callie Piper gave the Lady Owls the lead in the first when she singled to center field to allow Heather Wright to score from third.
FAU scored in the third when Nicole Myers delivered her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field.
Florida Atlantic jumped out early in game two as they scored four runs in the first. Callie Piper collected three of the RBI when she homered to left field. Piper finished 4-for-7 on the night with four RBI.
Nicole Myers was the story in the second game as she struck out 14 in seven innings, tying her season-high. She recorded seven consecutive strikeouts to take the Lady Owls into the fourth inning. Myers improves to 17-3.
FAU will host Rhode Island on Friday at 6 pm in a doubleheader.
