Softball Shuts Down Competition

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University won both of its games Friday on the first day of action at the FAU Worth Doubletree Classic in Boca Raton, FL. Jessica Braggins had two homers and five RBIs in FAU's 8-0 victory over Manhattan College. In the second game, the Owls defeated Northern Iowa, 2-0. FAU (23-10) has now won four straight and eight of its past nine with its last three wins being shutouts.

Against Manhattan, FAU took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI-double by Amy Bellisari. In the fifth, with FAU leading 2-0, Braggins hit a one-out, two-run homer to make it 4-0. Courtney Raney added a run-scoring single to give the Owls a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth, Jenna Lopez and Candice Freel each singled with two outs. Braggins followed with a three-run home run to center field to end the game at 8-0. Braggins is now tied for the team lead with three homers on the season.

Lopez finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Braggins went 2-for-4 and added two runs while Freel also had two hits.

Ashley Greene improved to 4-0 and picked up her second shutout of the season. The freshman allowed just two hits and struck out one with no walks.

Against Northern Iowa, FAU scored both of its runs in the fifth. Callie Piper led off with a double and advanced to third with one out on an infield single by Christina Thompson. With two outs, Piper scored on a wild pitch. Lopez followed with a single to left to drive in Thompson and make it 2-0.

Freel (9-6) picked up the win in relief. She allowed two hits and struck out five in three innings of work.



Lopez, who went 5-for-6 for the day, went 2-for-3 against UNI. Thompson also collected two hits in two at-bats.

Other action on Friday included Rhode Island defeating Manhattan, 4-0. URI also defeated Northern Iowa, 3-2.

Tournament play continues on Saturday with URI facing Manhattan at Noon. Northern Iowa takes on Manhattan at 2:00pm. Florida Atlantic will play Northern Iowa at 5:00pm followed by Rhode Island at 7:00pm.
