BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team lost both of its games at the Embassy Suites Classic on Saturday.
Lightning in the area pushed the start of the Owls' first game back until 8:00 p.m. FAU (8-17, 0-3 Sun Belt) lost to Western Kentucky 9-3 in a makeup game of a conference game that was rained out earlier this week. Joshlyn Martinez drove in Carly Speerin on an RBI infield single in the first inning to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. The advantage didn't last long as the Hilltoppers scored five runs in the top of the second, helped by three FAU errors to go ahead 5-1.
Alison Milam, Sarah Howell and Heather Barnes had consecutive singles to lead off the bottom of the second inning, but a Taylor Fawbush sacrifice fly drove in the only run of the inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2. WKU scored twice in the fourth to push its lead to 7-2. FAU had runners on first and second with just one out in the fourth after Barnes hit an RBI double, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat. The Hilltoppers scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings to provide the final score.
The Owls lost to Minnesota 5-1 in the nightcap. Minnesota scored twice in the first inning to establish early control. The Gophers added three more runs in the third inning, with the Owls committing two errors in the inning. FAU's only run came in the fifth inning, when Martinez drove in Laura Mann. Paige Pender retired 12 straight Gopher batters in relief of starter Sam Messer.
FAU will play Providence at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the final game of the Embassy Suites Classic. Live stats will be available for all tournament games and live audio for FAU's games will be available at www.fausports.com.
