BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University split a doubleheader with visiting Penn State University, Tuesday afternoon, in Boca Raton, FL. The Lady Owls took game one of, 2-1, before falling in the second game, 6-3. Amanda Morin picked up the complete-game victory in the first game.
In game one, FAU (11-14) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Jessica Braggins led off with a single up the middle. With one out, and Ebony Gray on second, Callie Piper grounded out, and Gray scored on a throwing error when PSU tried to throw her out advancing to third.
In the fifth, FAU made it 2-0 on a two-out single by Ginny Matthews that scored Michelle Shirah. PSU added a run in the seventh before Morin forced a groundout with two outs and runners at first and second.
Morin (5-8) allowed one run on eight hits. She walked one and struck out two.
In the second game, FAU jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Jessica Sachs led off with a walk and scored one out later on a double by Braggins. An error on the play allowed Braggins to advance to third, and she scored when Gray followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
After PSU (7-8) took the lead in the fourth with three runs, FAU tied it at 3-3 with a run in the fifth on a bases-loaded groundout by Amy Bellisari. The Nittany Lions put the game away in the top of the seventh when Megan Humphrey hit a three-run double with two outs to put PSU on top 6-3.
Candice Freel (6-4) took the loss for FAU. She allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits. She struck out three and walked two.
Overall, Braggins and Matthews highlighted FAU's attack from the plate. Bragins went 5-for-6 with an RBI while Matthews finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with an RBI.
Florida Atlantic next hosts Chattanooga, Thursday, in a 2:00pm doubleheader.
