BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team (17-11) fell to Hofstra 7-2, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Parents' Weekend Tournament.
The Owls jumped on the board in the first. Christina Martinez hit a one-out single to left. Lindsay Shell followed with a single to third putting Martinez in scoring position. The duo moved up a base on a Hofstra (10-3) pass ball while Martinez score the game's first run by taking advantage of a throwing error trying to catch Shell at second on the play. Two strikeouts would end the Owls' first inning threat and Hofstra would even the game at one in the top of the second.
The Pride tallied six runs on three hits and an FAU error in the top of the third inning to take control of the game despite FAU's threatened in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Stovall led-off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left. She moved to third on a Whitley Herb double. The Owls then loaded the bases when Martinez grounded to the pitcher but, Stovall drew the throw at third to load the bases with one out. Shell followed with a single to plate one run. But, it was the final run the Owls would score.
Offensively, Shell was 2-for-3 and Martinez was 2-for-4. Herb and Stovall were credited with FAU's two remaining hits. Samantha Messer began the game in the circle for the Owls but, was relieved in the third by Amanda Wilson. Messer allowed four hits, seven runs, five of which were earned. She struck out one and walked three. Wilson pitched 4.2 innings, gave up five hits, walked one and struck out two.
