Softball Splits Day Two of Parents' Weekend Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its two games on Saturday, losing to South Alabama 7-1 and beating Illinois 8-4.

South Alabama scored three runs in the third inning, two of them coming on a homerun to center field. The Jaguars (18-4) added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on a RBI double and a FAU fielding error. The Owls (17-10) scored their only run of the game on a throwing error by the Jaguars' pitcher in the bottom of the fifth. USA added two more runs in the top of the sixth to provide the final margin of victory.

FAU defeated Illinois 8-4 in its second game of the day. Whitley Herb's infield single scored Mickey Bell to give the Owls a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Illini (11-5) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a base hit up the middle. The tie wouldn't last long, in the top of the third, Carnesha Thompson and Shelby Knox completed a double steal, allowing FAU to retake the lead. Thompson came around to score on a Bell single, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Owls.

An Illinois solo homerun in the bottom of the inning trimmed FAU's lead to 3-2. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Owls broke the game open in the top of the fifth. Base hits by Knox and Thompson, followed by a Bell walk, loaded the bases with one out. Jordan Stovall and Kathryn Spack had consecutive RBI singles, taking FAU's lead to 5-2. After Stovall was retired on a fielder's choice, Christina Martinez doubled down the line in right, driving in Herb and Spack.



Illinois loaded the bases in the fifth and scored twice, but Kylee Hanson was able to avoid further damage. The Owls added an insurance run in the sixth on Stovall's infield single. In the seventh, Illinois was down to its last strike twice and had runners reach before a foul out to Thompson ended the game.

Hanson threw her 10th complete game of the year to pick up the win. The Owls will wrap up action in the Parents' Weekend Tournament on Sunday when they play Hofstra at 2:30 p.m.
