TAMPA, FL -
Florida Atlantic University's softball team inched closer to the all-time consecutive win total with two victories at the University of South Florida Speedline Tournament. The Lady Owls captured the first game 4-0 against Central Michigan, a team they faced in the 1999 NCAA Regional Tournament. The second game was a 5-0 win over Purdue University. FAU improved to 27-3 on the season.
Both games saw FAU use both pitchers. Nikki Myers started the first and pitched five innings, allowed two hits and retired four via the strikeout. Candice Freel finished the game. The second game saw the duo follow a similar pattern. Myers started, pitched six and gave way to Freel. Neither were save opportunities for the freshman.
Offensively, Ginny Matthews had another outstanding day. The sophomore had a single in the first game along with Pam Mazarella's two-run single and Callie Piper's RBI single. Heather Wright earned the team's final RBI on a fielder's choice.
The second game's damage was done in the second. Wright had a RBI single, Matthews, who was 3-for-3 in the game hit her fourth homer of the season. Amy Bellasari had a RBI double and a sacrifice bunt by Piper highlighted the game.
With a perfect, 6-0 mark in the tournament, FAU ended round-robin play and will begin championship play on Sunday. Opponent and game time has yet to be determined.
